What is the West Bengal Free Bus Travel Scheme?
The West Bengal government notified on its official website that the scheme will roll out across West Bengal, and every woman who is a permanent resident of West Bengal can apply for a smart card and get the benefit.
Ladies, you don’t need to worry about the daily bus tickets. It will help you commute to the workplace, or school, college, markets or visiting relatives, it will be completely free.
Eligibility Criteria for West Bengal Free Bus Travel Scheme 2026
- All women who are permanent residents of West Bengal
- In the Government notification, no age limits are mentioned. It covers all women (Students, working Women, senior citizens, housewives, etc)
- You must provide a valid Identity proof
Who Is Not eligible for West Bengal Free Bus Travel Scheme 2026
- The scheme is only for women, not for Mens.
- You can travel only in State Government buses, not private buses
- You must be a resident of West Bengal; otherwise, you are not eligible
In short, you can avail this benefit to free travel across west bengal only state run buses like West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC), South Bengal State Transport Corporation (SBSTC )and North Bengal State Transport Corporation (NBSTC).

As Per Notification It is effective from 1st June 2026. The government will issue a Smart card for women. However, as of now, until the government issues a Smart card to the women, they can travel with a valid ID proof provided by the West Bengal Government.
Step-by-step guide: How to Apply for West Bengal Free Bus Travel Smart Card?
The bad news is you can’t apply for it online. The application process is to be completed through the BDO (Block Development Officer)& SDO(Sub Divisional Officer)office.
Collect the form, read it carefully and fill the form. Attach the supporting documents’ soft copies. Self-attest it. You also need to attach a colour photo. That’s it, you are done.

The female population in West Bengal is estimated to be approximately 5.15 crores. The government of West Bengal has declared a free bus ride scheme for all women in West Bengal.
